The Board of Directors of the American Liszt Society wishes to express its deep sadness upon the passing of Maestro André Watts, our recent recipient of the Medal of the American Liszt Society. André Watts was one of the most prominent and sought after concert pianists on the global scene in the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century. A superlative artist of deep musical conviction and prodigious Lisztian pianism, Watts graced the world stage with an ennobling spirit of uncompromising and uplifting music making. As well, he was a master teacher, inspiring and mentoring aspiring young musicians at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. The ALS offers our heartfelt condolences to his spouse Joan and all his family, as well as his students, faculty colleagues, and his friends and admirers worldwide. A unique musical voice in the world of piano is now silent, but his artistry and deep humanity remains in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him and hearing him bring music to life.
